Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company.

  • History

Lexington Brewing CompanyAlltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company™ is a passion for Dr. Pearse Lyons. Lyons, who spent his early years as an intern at both the Guinness and Harp Lager breweries, went on to become the first Irishman to achieve a formal degree in Brewing and Distilling from the British School of Malting and Brewing, a school with over 100 years of history. Five generations of Lyons’ family worked as coopers, supplying barrels to distilleries in Ireland and for a quarter of a century. Dr. Lyons’ alcohol school was synonymous with brewing and distilling. Lyons’ history, experience, and passion converged serendipitously in Kentucky.

In 1999, when the former Lexington Brewing Company closed its doors, Lyons resurrected the brewing and distilling tradition of Lexington that dates back to the 1790s. Alltech opened its $9.2 million distillery, the first to be build in Lexington in more than 100 years.

Town Branch Distillery

Alltech’s Town Branch Distillery is the first new distillery in Lexington in more than 100 years. The $9.2 million facility will produce Alltech’s Town Branch Bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve malt whiskey and the company’s bourbon-infused coffee drink, Bluegrass Sundown. Its opening makes Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distillery Company one of the few sites in the world to house both a brewery and distillery at the same location.

Town Branch Distillery is located next to the company’s brewery at the corner of Maxwell and Cross streets and is the only place in Kentucky where you can find both a distillery and brewery. Town Branch Distillery is built with Kentucky limestone and features glass walls on three sides to showcase its centerpiece cooper stills. The 20,000 sq. foot facility will be the production site for Alltech’s Town Branch Bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve malt whiskey and bourbon-infused coffee drink, Bluegrass Sundown.

With a great start the distillery became the seventh member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. This new addition to the Bourbon Trail has moved the famed tourism adventure into the heart of downtown Lexington. The new distillery will now draw tourists directly into the heart of Bluegrass providing an experience, a lifestyle and a part of our culture.

Public tours of the distillery will be available seven days a week. For more information please visit
